Zhao Wei Has Been Appointed as the President of University of Macau

Zhao Wei, an outstanding alumnus of Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU) and at present the dean of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute , has been appointed as the president of University of Macau and will take up the post in the new semester (2008/2009). The term of presidency is a period of five years.
Zhao Wei is a famous Chinese-American scholar. Born in 1953, he graduated from the Physics Department of SNU in 1977 and successively obtained master s and doctor s degree of Computer and Information Science Major of University of Massachusetts respectively in 1983 and 1986. At present he is the dean of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.Previously he held the post of the director of Computer and Network System Branch of National Science Foundation of USA and senior assistant vice president of American Texas A M University, in charge of scientific research.
As the oldest university of science and engineering in America, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is renowned for its rich teachers resources, advanced teaching facilities and rigorous academic atmosphere of attaching importance to combining theory with practice among the circles of education, academy and engineering and technology in USA. As a noted member of Institute of Electron and Electric Engineer, Zhao has already made great contributions in the field of distributed calculation, real-time operation system , network and information of computer, and internet safety. The research group led by him has won various honors and awards including the Best Paper Prize awarded by the international conference of IEEE Distributed Calculation System, the Best Paper Prize awarded by the National Space and Electron Conference of USA , and Technology Transfer Prize awarded by Defense Advanced Research Particular Administration ( DARPA), and so on.In 2007 IEEE Distribution and Concurrent Technology Committee conferred the Preeminent Achievement Prize on him. Aside from those prizes, he is the holder of two American patents and has published over 270 papers on the periodicals, materials of conference and books. (trans.Tang Zhenna)
