From the 3rd to the 7th September 2010,the Frontiers of Plasmonics, a satellite meeting of the 11thNear Field Optics(NFO) Conference, was held on Yanta Campus. The meeting was jointly sponsored by Nanoscale Physics & Devices Lab. (NPDL) in Institute of Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences and School of Physics and Information Technology of SNNU.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Xu Hongxing, Director of NPDL in Institute of Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program). Fang Yu, the Chancellor of SNNU, delivered a speech of welcome. Wang Yongxiang, the Chief of Mathematical Physics Office of Chinese Academy of Science, made an opening remark. Professor Peter Nordlander, an internationally known expert in the field from Rice University in USA, delivered a speech at the meeting.

Professor Martin Moskovits, a distinguished physicochemist from UC at Santa Barbara, a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, Optical Society of America and Canadian Royal Society, was invited and gave the first report. Other distinguished guests are Professor Li Jikai, Director of 211 Project Construction Department, Professor Liu Zhaotie, Director of Science and Technology Department, Professor Lin Shuyu, Dean of College of Physics and Information Technology, Professor Du Yeting, Secretary of the Party Committee of College of Physics and Information Technology, Professor Qu Shixian, Director ofSNNU Laboratory Construction and Administration Department.

Professor Xiao Zhenghong, the Vice Chancellor of SNNU, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a closing remark.Professor Peter Nordlander and Professor Namin Halas of RICE University collaboratively made a summary of this meeting and arrangements for the next meeting. Prize-winners for outstanding posters were also awarded at the closing ceremony. The ceremony was presided by Professor Zheng Hairong of College of Physics & Information Technology.

There are over 80 scholars and experts attended the conference. The international scholars are from more than 20 oversea research institutions in Europe, North America, and other parts of Asia. The domestic scholars are prominent ones from leading academic institutions in China. The meeting mainly focuses on the latest development in various fields of Plasmons, such as Near Field Optics, Chemical and Biology Sensor, Wave Guide and Transformational Material. Participants of the meeting had a serious, extensive and in-depth exchange of ideas and heated discussion by means of keynote reports, oral presentation and poster presentation. These high-level, forward-looking and pioneering reports and exchanges unfold a promising future and prospect of wide application of Plasmonics. (Trans: Wang Zhinan)
