The 2010 MCM/ICMContest was held all over the world on February 19 through 23. NPU won 8 international first prizes and 8 international second prizes. This is the best results NPU has achieved since 1992. The proportion of first prizes and second prizes won by NPU is 94.11% ranking the first among the nation's universities.
Altogether 2610 teams from around the world participated in the contest. Duke University, Harvard University, Princeton University, MIT, 31 teams from Tsinghua University, 23 teams from Peking University, 21 teams from Zhejiang University, 30 teams from Jilin University and others took part in the contest. NPU has 17 undergraduate teams in the contest.
The MCM/ICM contest is jointly sponsored by American Mathematical Society, American Industry and Applied Mathematics Society, the U.S National Security Agency etc. It is one of the best known contests worldwide. The objective of the contest is for students to analyze problems and find their solutions.
Three students are organized in one team. Within 96 hours, they should select a problem and establish its mathematical model, and then write a paper to state, simplify and assume the problem, prove its validity, establish its mathematical model, find its solution and develop its software, verify and improve the model, discuss its merits and drawbacks and possible applications.
The contest requires students to have solid mathematics, modeling ability and the ability to write in English.
