On Mar. 30, the council inaugural meeting of Guangzhou Institute of Modern Industrial Technology (GIMIT) and its unveiling ceremony were held at Nansha Science and Technology Innovation Center.
GIMIT is jointly founded by State Ministry of Education and Guangzhou government, with SCUT serving as chief organizer. It caters to the modern industrial system of Guangzhou and even the Pearl River Delta, and serves as a public technological innovation platform which provides comprehensive services to the pillar industries, small and medium-sized enterprises. At present, among the ten platforms in planning, the first three to be initiated are technology R&D platform of new energy, the light industry technology and engineering R&D platform, marine and coastal engineering R&D platform.
On the same day, the first session of the GIMIT council was established. XU Zhibiao, deputy mayor of Guangzhou, was elected council chairman, and LI Yuanyuan, President of SCUT, was appointed as the first dean of GIMIT.
According to the construction and development plan of Guangzhou modern industrial system, the construction of GIMIT will be carried out in two phases. The first phase, the construction period, goes from today to 2012. During this period, the basic formation of the Institute will be completed, with a total investment of 300 million yuan and planned construction area of 40,000 m2. It will introduce a batch of competitive technological achievements and realize their transformation and industrialization, producing more than 2 billion yuan economic benefits to the society.
With an open construction concept, GIMIT faces to universities directly supervised by Ministry of Education, and cooperates with other institutions of higher education and leading enterprises. Presently, a Tsinghua University research team is discussing the co-management issues with the technology R&D center of green energy.
Lanzhou University has already sent relevant personnel to Nansha to carry out the preliminary work. Several competitive enterprises including Lonkey Industrial Co. Ltd. Guangzhou, Qinghai Sanjiang Group Co. Ltd. and Guangji Marine Industry Co. Ltd. Guangdong have confirmed their participation in the construction of the Institute.
Moreover, the Preparatory office of the Institute has reached a cooperation agreement with Panyu Industrial Park, Guangzhou.
As to the management pattern, the Institute dean takes charge of its operation under the supervision of the council, and SCUT will be in charge of the daily administration.
By now, the preliminary construction of the Institute has been completed. Its unveiling ceremony opens a new chapter in the production-education-research cooperation between SCUT with other involved universities and Guangzhou government.
