Sharply at 8:30 p.m., March 27, on SCUT South Campus, C8 and C9 dormitory buildings fell dark like responding to an issued order, and in other buildings, lights were also gradually switched off. Students walked out of their dormitories to mark the second participation of Guangzhou universities' in the Earth Hour event.
Low-carbon economy and climate change have become the major concerns since Copenhagen World Climate Conference in late 2009. It is the fourth annual Earth Hour initiated by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) and over 100 Chinese universities in 12 cities announced participation. With Fresh Environment Defense Club (FEDC) of SCUT being the organizer, more than 100 clubs in 7 Guangzhou universities took part in the event.
Called by FEDC, over 1,000 members of three SCUT student associations including FEDC, Anneal Ambition Association and All Star Astronomical Association, were supposed to join the event. CHEN Zi, a junior student from School of Materials Science & Engineering and president of FEDC, said: "We have been preparing for the event since early March. Information is delivered in a paperless way, that is, by using Internet, QQ, Fetion, BBS, video, broadcast and banners, etc. We will fasten the environment protection concept from the beginning to the end."
The activity was backed by Youth League Committee and Student Affairs Department of south campus. Answering the call, lights in some public facilities and icons went dark.
To make this one hour more colorful, the organizers held many activities, such as movie show of The Road, healthy race on the inner ring, and star watching, etc., through which students could acquire knowledge and improve physical fitness while attending this environmental action.
