Nobel Prize Laureate, Prof. Torsten N.Wiesel visited JNU

Prof. Torsten N.Wiesel, Nobel Prize Laureate visited JNU at Oct. 14th and 15th and accepted the appointment of Honorary Professor of JNU.

Prof. So Kwok-Fai Academician of Chinese Academy of Science and Chair professor of Anatomy Department of HKU, Prof. Wu Wutian from Anatomy Department of HKU, Prof. Hu Jun, President of JNU, Prof. Lu Daxiang, Vice President of JNU, and more than 400 faculty and students attended the awarding ceremony.

President Hu Jun extended his sincere gratitude and warm welcome to Prof. Wiesel. He pointed out that Jinan University has always been attaching great importance to the development of scientific research. JNU also makes efforts to build a harmonious environment to pursue academic and scientific excellence and creativity. Some famous Nobel Prize Laureates such as Prof. Chen-Ning Franklin Yang, and Prof. Tsung-Dao Lee used to visit JNU for researches and lectures. They created precious opportunities for Jinan students to witness and experience their wisdom and elegant demeanor. President Hu also expressed his wish that our students could learn from Laureates spirit in science, be diligent and bold in research and renovation. Afterwards, President Hu awarded the Honorary Professor Certificate and adorned the school badge of JNU to Professor Wiesel.

After the awarding ceremony, Prof. Wiesel gave a lecture on Do We Learn To See? The Structure and Function of the Visual Cortex to faculty and students.

Introduction to Prof. Torsten N. Wiesel
Prof. Torsten N. Wiesel was born in Sweden on June 3, 1924. He graduated from Karolinska Institute. I n 1955, he went to America and from that on he has ever worked in Johns Hopkins University, Harvard Medical School and Rockefeller University. In 1981 he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with David H. Hubel, for their discoveries concerning information processing and development of the visual system; the prize was shared with Roger W. Sperry for his independent research on the cerebral hemispheres. As the Nobel Prize laureate, Professor Wiesel has been awarded honorary professorship by many universities in the world and Jinan University is the first one in China.
