In commemoration of Wu Guanzhong, a special exhibition entitled Worth Painting , is presenting a total of his 62 masterpieces donated to the National Art Museum of China at Hall 19, 20 and 21 since July 7 until August 8, 2010.
The National Art Museum of China has unique and profound relation with Wu Guanzhong. A number of his important exhibitions were held in the National Art Museum of China. For example, in 1979, Painting Exhibition of Wu Guanzhong was held in the museum, which led a new artistic trend in the Chinese artistic circle at the beginning of the reform and opening up.
In 1999, Artistic Exhibition of Wu Guanzhong was held in the National Art Museum of China, and Wu Guanzhong donated 10 pieces of his paintings to the country. In 2009, on the exhibition of Cultivation and Dedication Donation by Wu Guanzhong , he donated 36 pieces of his paintings to the country.
The commemoration exhibition reflects the evaluation from the artistic circle to his remarkable achievements.
As a landmark visual sign of the exhibition design, a string of thick ink thread is displayed through the three halls, which derives from his ink wash painting in his later life called The line in the sky (2008). In the method of the contrast between two halls, the exhibition reflects his achievements in both in oil painting nationalization and ink wash modernization and his accomplishment since he returned to China after study in Europe.
Highlight exhibits include The statute of the Tang Dynasty on Foguang Temple on the Wutai Mountain (1954), The geese in the Taihu Lake(1974), The person in the portrait (the portrait of Wu Guanzhong s wife Zhu Biqin, 1995), City night(1997), Wild grass (2008) and Day ad night (2008). In addition, the exhibition showcases the drawing stand Wu Guangzhong used in most of his life, other drawing tools and a large number of documents and materials about the master.
Moreover, a public document-reading area about Wu Guanzhong is arranged to reveal his painting collection, exhibition catalogue, books, biographies, manuscripts and some books by domestic and overseas scholars on Wu Guanzhong. Such a comprehensive exhibition including his artistic achievements, theoretical accomplishments and literal attainments is expected to restore a complete image of the master to the greatest extent and highlight his personality and cultural temperament.
Besides the public reading area, a series of public educational activities will be organized for the public, including providing 10,000 free tickets arranged for university students in Beijing and Tianjin and inviting them to appreciate the masterpieces and the master. In addition, a total of three seminars on Wu Guanzhong artistic achievements will be held in the museum on July 7, 11, and 17 respectively.
