On the afternoon of Nov.6th, a ceremony of engaging Prof. Gene E. Likens, academician of US National Academy of Sciences as honorary professor of JNU was held in Tsang Hin-chi Science Building. President Hu Jun attended the ceremony and issued certificate of honorary professorship to Prof. Likens. After the ceremony, Prof. Likens gave an academic lecture on Limnology, the Queen of the Natural Sciences: Its role in understanding water resource protection and use to the audiences.
Prof. Likens is founder of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study and Institute of Ecosystem Studies. As academician of US National Academy of Sciences, Royal Swedish Academy of Science and Austrian Academy of Sciences, he is one of the most remarkable ecologists in the world. He was awarded Einstein Prize by Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. He created the theories and methods of watershed ecology system studies. He is also the founder of acid rain studies and revealed the mechanism of influence of acid rain over water ecological diversity andThe process of forest succession. Because of his outstanding contribution, Prof. Likens has been rewarded a number of national and professional prizes at the highest level.
