From June 14 to 20, the delegation from Shandong University visited Portland State University, the University of California, San Diego, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Northwestern Polytechnic University, and other research institutions, and met SDU alumni during the visit. At Portland State University, Roy Koch, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, met the delegation. Fan Liming, Vice-president of Shandong University, talked with Marvin Raiser, the President of the Liberal Arts College, Agnes Hofman, the Vice-dean of studies responsible for the students enrollment, Gil Latz, Vice-dean of studies responsible for the international communication, Scott Dawson, the Head of the Management Department, and Eric Bodegon, the Head of the Physics Department. They agreed on exchange and co-training of students, the training of Chinese teachers, exchange visits of teachers, communication in the summer holiday, foreign languages training and decided to conduct all-round cooperation soon. At the University of California, San Diego, Barbara Sawrey, the Vice-president for undergraduate education, met the delegation. They agreed on co-training of top students in math, physics, chemistry and biology, and training of excellent engineers. Fan Liming also exchanged ideas with them about general education reform. The members of the delegation also met Michelle Hermas, the Director of theInternational Office, Lynn Anderson, the Director of the International Education Center, Becky Arce, the Director for the summer project, Roxanne Nuhhaily, the Director for further education, and Brain Maple, the Head of the Physics Department. They talked about exchange of students, projects in the summer holiday, cooperation in further education, and agreed upon some other cooperation. Also, Fan Liming met some alumni working in American, including Wang Xinnian, Yang Wanli working in the Physics Department, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; Sun Shangzhi, working in the Math Department, San Francisco; Jiao Jun, working in the Physics Department, Portland State University; Jiang Huaidong, working in the Crystal Material Institute, the University of California, Los Angeles; Sun Fengzhu, working in the Math Department, the University of Southern California; Niu Xiantao, working in the Chemistry Department, Los Angeles. Fan introduced recent development of Shandong University, invited them to work in Shandong University for a long or short time, and encouraged them to make contributions for our school. The alumni were encouraged by the recent development, some deciding to visit or give lectures in Shandong University soon and putting forward some advice for further development. They also visited Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Northwestern Polytechnic University and talked about co-training of students.
