School of Life Science was rewarded a 1/3 million dollar research reward granted by the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation B&MGF on Nov. 2010. The research project The Global Health R&D capacity and opportunities in China is aimed to draw a landscape and guidance on R&D status and potential capacities in the area of health related R&D in China, and to promote and accelerate international investments on fighting diseases, particularly on high-risk infection disease such as HIV/AIDS, Polio and Tuberculosis (TB).
The cooperation between USTC and B&MGF is for the first time though, the Gates foundation wishes to further the relationship with USTC in the future. On Nov. 24, President Hou jianguo attended a special reception hosted by William Gates, father of Bill Gates who runs B&MGF.
B&MGF has invested in research on HIV prevention in China since 2005, supporting both governmental and nongovernmental programs that are focused on HIV, tobacco-use prevent and agriculture development etc.
