Prof. Dr. Aaron Ciechanover, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, visited Nanjing University (NJU) on October 14 and delivered a lecture on Xianlin Campus.
Over 400 NJU faculty and students, together with teachers and students from the High School Affiliated to Nanjing Normal University and Nanjing Foreign Language School, attended the lecture.
Dr. Ciechanover in his lecture shared his latest research progress, and encouraged students to study overseas for advanced technology and returned upon graduation to serve the motherland. He also pointed out that scientific invention is a double-edged sword. Researchers should take advantage of its positive aspects to promote social development and benefit human beings.
Dr. Ciechanover also visited the Celebrity Garden on Xianlin Campus and planted a Buckeye tree there in the company of NJU President Prof. Chen Jun.
Dr. Ciechanover is now Professor at the Unit of Biochemistry at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) in Haifa. He shared the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Irwin Rose and Avram Hershko for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation.
