Two Asteroids Named after NJU Professors

The National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) have recently named the No. 185538 asteroid discovered on Dec. 14, 2007 and the No. 185640 asteroid discovered on March 1, 2008 in honor of Nanjing University Professor Fang Cheng and Professor Sun Yisui respectively in recognition of their contributions to China`s astronomical research.
Prof. Fang Cheng and Prof. Sun Yisui are well-known astronomers in China and Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Fang graduated from Nanjing University in 1959, and since then he has been teaching in the Department of Astronomy, Nanjing University. He was in charge of the design and construction of the Solar Tower Telescope of Nanjing University, the only one of its kind in China. With successive improvements to the telescope, a lot of valuable spectral data of solar active phenomena have been obtained during over 20 years.
Prof. Sun graduated from the Astronomy Department of Nanjing University in 1958. He is a renowned expert on celestial mechanics and nonlinear dynamics, and has made a significant contribution to research in hydromechanics and the origin of comets.
