The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that the accident rate for western-built jet aircraft in 2010 is the lowest in aviation history, as shown in the aviation safety performance for 2010.
The 2010 global accident rate of 0.61, equal to one accident for every 1.6-million flights, is an improvement from the 0.71 accident rate recorded in 2009, which is equivalent to one accident for every 1.4-million flights. The global accident rate is measured in hull losses; an accident in which the aircraft is destroyed or damaged and cannot be repaired, per million flights of western-built jet aircraft. Giovanni Bisignani, director general and CEO, IATA, was quoted in eTurbo News as having said that achieving the lowest accident rate in the history of aviation showed that their commitment to safety was bearing results. Bisignani added that they must remain focussed and determined to move closer to the goal of zero accidents and zero fatalities year-by-year.
