THAI orders weight loss

Flight attendants of Thai Airways International (THAI) are in dissent against the airlines new weight and shape standards.

According to a report in eGlobal Travel Media, the new regulations stipulate that female attendants who are 160-centimetres tall must not weigh above 66-kilogrammes while male attendants who are 165-centimetres tall must not weigh over 74.8-kilogrammes. The regulation, implemented in June last year, gave the flight attendants six months to comply. Flight attendants who failed to meet the new weight standard were shifted to domestic routes or single-day round trips, while flight attendants who remain overweight after a year will be transferred to ground services. A total of 40 flight attendants failed to comply with the new standards, which resulted in them losing their international flight allowance.

The airline insists that weight standards would have to be implemented so that flight attendants could be agile and able to evacuate passengers from a plane within 90-seconds in the event of an accident.
