YUAN CHUNQING, SECRETARY OF SHANXI PROVINCIAL PARTY COMMITTEE, VISITS SHANXI UNIVERSITY FOR INSPECTION AND EXTENDS HIS REGARDS TO ALL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

On the morning of September 9, 2010, Yuan Chunqing, secretary of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee, arrived at Shanxi University to carry out an inspection in the company of Xue Yanzhong (deputy secretary of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and chairman of Shanxi Provincial People s Political Consultative Committee), Zhang Ruipeng (deputy secretary general of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee), Li Dongfu (head of Shanxi Provincial Education Department) and other leaders. Following an on-the-spot inspection, Mr. Yuan listened to the introduction of the construction and development of the university given by Qin Liangyu (Secretary of Shanxi University Party Committee) and Guo Guichun (President of Shanxi University). When it came to the university s goal of building itself into an exemplary research-oriented university, which was timely put forward in the light of the demand of the local economic development in Shanxi Province, Mr. Yuan appraised it in a fully positive way. When visiting the laboratories, Secretary Yuan talked to the teachers and the students working there and enquired about their work, life and study. He also paid a visit to Professor Peng Kunchi (Academician with Chinese Academy of Sciences) as well as Professor Yao Dianzhong (an eminent calligrapher), extending to them his sincere regards and best wishes. Besides, on behalf of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and Shanxi Provincial Government, he expressed to all the teachers and those engaged in education-related work his warmest festive greetings. The university leaders including Qin Liangyu, Guo Guichun, Li Zhongren, Liu Diansheng and Liang Jiye accompanied the secretary throughout the inspection.

During the inspection, Secretary Yuan stressed that Shanxi University should take Rooted in Shanxi, serving Shanxi and developing Shanxi as its guiding principle, strengthen the construction of key disciplines, intensify the efforts in cultivating qualified personnel and build an exemplary research-oriented university, thus providing intellectual, scientific and technological support as well as human resources for the transformational development by strides. As a century-old school, Shanxi University has occupied an important position in the history of China s higher education. Expected to carry on a fine tradition while looking to the future development and increasing transformational development, the university should devote itself to the construction of an exemplary research-oriented university.

Secretary Yuan proposed four of the imperative tasks confronting the university. First, taking the construction of key disciplines as the focus of the school s work, it is to strengthen the cultivation of the teaching staff and speed up the construction of a research-oriented university. Second, taking The Laboratory Engineering Research Center as the base, to speed up the integration of production, learning and research, thus contributing to the transformational development. Third, taking the discipline restructuring as the emphasis in work, to intensify the efforts in setting up new specialties, thus providing instant personnel back-up for the economic and social development of Shanxi Province. Fourth, taking the construction of grassroots organizations and the backbone forces with the Chinese Communist Party and the Communist Youth League of China, it is to strengthen the ideological work among teachers and, in particular, students, thus providing solid organizational guarantees for the cultivation of a new generation of well-rounded and well prepared college students.

Secretary Yuan stated that, the Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and the Shanxi Provincial Government should increase support for Shanxi University, since it was a key unit as well as the most prestigious of the higher learning institutions in Shanxi Province.

However, most of the future support would be for research projects in that research projects embody the planning and administration level of a university. In view of that, Mr. Yuan reiterated his wish for Shanxi University to strengthen the construction of key disciplines so as to build itself into a top class university, and to also concentrate their efforts to the authentification and application of research projects.
