HUST Delegation on Academic Visit to Japan

Mr. Yang Yong, Vice-President of HUST headed a delegation to Japan attending the Sino-Japanese Energy Security and Environmental Protection Expert Forum between Oct. 19 and 23 at the invitation of Prof. Ichiro Okura, Vice-Chancellor of Tokyo, Institute of Technology TIT , Prof. Hideo Nagashima, Vice-President of Kyushu University, and Prof. Yukihisa Kitamura, Vice-Chancellor of Tohoku University. The delegation visited the three universities and exchanged views with university chiefs on issues like IAR Industry-Academia-Research , the R & D management philosophy of Japanese universities after reorganization as public university corporations, energy saving & emission reduction as well as development trends of low-carbon economy.

The Sino-Japanese Energy Security and Environmental Protection Expert Forum, co-sponsored by TIT and HUST, was convened in Tokyo between Oct. 20 and 22. The theme is Sino-Japanese low-carbon economy and CO2 mitigation . Mr. Yang Yong delivered a keynote speech in which he introduced several aspects of HUST including the overview of IAR, undergraduate and postgraduate education and the achievements in energy security and environmental protection. He also held discussions with experts from China, Japan, Australia and America.

On the sidelines of the talks, Prof. Ichiro Okura met with Yang Yong and his delegation. Both HUST and TIT are leading universities dedicated to engineering and offer programs in bioscience and science. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on developing strategic partnership, reciprocity in research and education cooperation and sustainable development. They also agreed to take the lead to carry out substantial collaboration in the areas of energy and environment. Prof. Okazaki, head of the School of Engineering of TIT who is in close contact with HUST also met with the delegation. The two sides exchanged views on various issues such as the implementation and further development of the major international joint research program The generation and control of CO2 and other pollutants using the oxygen-enriched combustion flue gas reheat method , which is undertaken by TIT in collaboration with the National Leading Laboratory for Coal Combustion of HUST, and co-funded by Japan Science and Technology Agency JST and the National Natural Science Foundation of China NSFC . They also discussed how to expand cooperation and enhance their international influence and status in CO2 control.

On Oct. 19 and Oct.23, the delegation paid a visit to Kyushu University and Tohoku University of Japan respectively. Professor Hideo Nagashima, Vice Chancellor of Kyushu University, Director of the Pilot Material and Chemical Institute and Chair of G-COE Japan met with the delegation. They had a frank and friendly conversation on how to turn research into practice, and how to promote cooperation with enterprises after the corporatization of Kyushu University. Besides, they also exchanged views on the R&D management.

During their stay in Tohoku University, Vice Chancellor Prof. Yukihisa Kitamura received the delegation. The two parties carried out dialogues on the history, education philosophy and Industry-Academia Partnerships of both universities and they also discussed issues such as future cooperation in scientific research, exchange visits of teachers, and joint education programs for students.

Prof. Xu Houming and Prof. Yao Hong, the two directors of the National Leading Laboratory for Coal Combustion, and Ma Xinqiang, Chairman of Huagong Tech Co.Ltd also attended the forum and meetings.
