On December 2 Mr. Jon Meade Huntsman, the newly appointed United States Ambassador to China, together with US Consul General in Shanghai Beatrice Camp, visited the Johns Hopkins University - Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies at Nanjing University (NJU) and gave a speech to the faculty and students there.
Prof. Hong Yinxing, Chancellor of Nanjing University, attended the lecture and delivered the welcome speech. Chancellor Hong in his speech emphasized the important role of the Hopkins Nanjing Center in the bilateral political, economic and cultural exchanges between China and America.
Mr. Huntsman expressed his special feeling towards China. He said there are good prospects for Sino-American cooperation on energy issues and the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. He also answered the questions raised by the students.
Mr. Huntsman had arrived in Beijing on August 21, 2009 to begin his assignment and delivered his first press conference on August 22, when he announced the news that President Obama would visit China in mid-November.
Mr. Huntsman has a deep passion for the Chinese culture and speaks Standard Mandarin Chinese fluently. Mr. and Mrs. Huntsman adopted a girl from Yangzhou, Jiangsu province, in 1999 and named her Yang Leyi.
