The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the worldwide implementation of the 2D bar coded boarding passes (BCBP), replacing the magnetic stripe boarding passes.
Giovanni Bisignani, director general and CEO, IATA, was quoted in Travel Daily Asia as having said that this the next important step to provide passengers with more convenience and choice.
The use of the BCBP brings a multitude of advantages. Passengers will now have several convenient check-in options, whether it be at home, at a kiosk, on a mobile device or at an airport check-in counter. BCBP also simplifies the journey for passengers with flight connections or travelling on different airlines by allowing the issue of a single printed boarding pass for multiple flights. Moreover, it saves carriers from the prohibitive costs of printing the magnetic stripe boarding passes.
