Shanghai-Beijing ready for speed

China s Ministry of Railways has announced that the high-speed rail link set to run between Shanghai and Beijing will be complete by mid-June 2011.

With this new link, travel time between China s two largest cities will be cut down to less than five hours compared to the current rail link that takes 18-hours. According to a report in Travel Daily Asia, the trains will operate between Shanghai s Hongqiao Railway Station and Beijing s South Railway Station, running through Tianjin municipality and Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. Ticket prices have not been announced yet but are expected to cost less than the average CNY1, 200 (US$181) Beijing-Shanghai air tickets.

The high-speed rail link is considered to be the single most expensive infrastructure in China, with an estimated cost of CNY220.9-billion.
