North Queensland in Australia braces itself as cyclone Yasi intensifies to a category five overnight. It is expected to hit Innisfail and Cardwell at approximately 10pm tonight.
Yasi is feared to surpass the devastating effects of cyclones Larry and Tracy. According to a report in eTravel Blackboard, its 300-kilometres per hour winds are set to hit at high tide which is expected to create storm surges of up to four metres, causing possible flooding, particularly south of where the cyclone hits land.
Airports in Cairns and Townsville have closed down at 10am this morning and all major arterial roads will be closed down due to dangerous driving conditions. Qantas and QantasLink flights to and from Cairns and Townsville may be cancelled.
