Ibaraki Airport in Tokyo aims to be a specialised budget hub for low-cost carriers (LCCs) by offering cheaper landing fees and facility charges.
The Ibaraki Airport, which opened last March, is located 80-kilometres from Tokyo. It is currently servicing Asiana Airlines Seoul-Ibaraki flights, Spring Airlines Shanghai-Ibaraki flights and SKYMARK s Sapporo, Nagoya and Kobe-Ibaraki flights. According to a report in TTG Asia, the airport can handle 10-flights a day and aircraft as large as a B767-300ER. To appeal to LCCs, Ibaraki plans to keep terminal facilities to a minimum and provide independent ground handlers.
Other airports in Tokyo include Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport, both of which do not have budget terminal facilities.
