Cyclone Yasi which hit North Queensland yesterday and was rated as category five, has now subsided to a category two. Although power lines are down, no casualties have been reported thus far and there has been little or no damage to tourism infrastructure.
The centre of the cyclone passed over the coast south of Cairns, while the small tourism and agricultural centres of Tully and Mission Beach have reported structural damage. Cairns escaped the eye of the cyclone and most hotels in the town were already preparing for trade, according to a report in Travel Mole.
Nearly all air, ferry and other transport services will be back to normal and most island resorts are back into operation. Qantas suspended flights to and from Cairns and Townsville airports yesterday and today but the airline hopes to resume services tomorrow.
