On May 28, a ceremony to grant academician certificate was held by Royal Irish Academy (RIA). Chinese scientist Da-Wen Sun, expert on food engineering and lifetime professor at University College of Dublin (UCD) was granted the certificate.
Prof. SUN studied in South China University of Technology (SCUT) and has received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, master's degree in the same subject, and PhD in Chemical Engineering in 1982, 1985 and 1988 respectively. In 1995, he got employed by UCD, and as the first Chinese lifetime professor in Ireland, he is currently the professor in Food and Biosystems Engineering, doctoral supervisor, and director of Food Refrigeration & Computerized Food Technology Institute of UCD.

Prof. SUN is holding several posts: visiting professor of several Chinese universities, consultant professor of School of Light Industry and Food Science, SCUT, standing director and Honorary Vice-President of International Commission of Agricultural Engineering (CIGR), the editor-in-chief of Food and Bioprocess Technology (Springer), and series editor of Contemporary Food Engineering book series (CRC Press / Taylor & Francis).

He enjoys a high reputation among his international counterparts and is a leading authority on Biosystems Engineering and Food Science & Engineering, and that s why he was elected as academician by RIA on March 16.
