Founder of China s Econometrics Dies at 87

Professor Lin Shaogong, China s renowned statistician and econometrician , died of illness on November 7th at the age of 87.

Lin Shaogong, Honorary Director of Chinese Modern Statistics Society and Consultant to Chinese Qualitative &Technical Economics Society, was widely considered as the "Father of Mathematical Statistics" in China. He was consultant to the School of Economics of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Honorary Dean of the Center for Quantity Economics and Economic Research at the university.

He graduated from the Department of Economics of Central University in 1944. In 1947, he went to study at Louisiana State University and two years later at the University of Illinois. In 1952 he got his PhD in Economics. In 1953, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Dayton in Ohio. In the following year, with the support from his wife, he determined to return to China. Since 1955, he has been teaching at HUST.

Prof. Lin has made remarkable academic achievements in his lifetime. He promoted the development of mathematical statistics in the country. He was also the founder of China s Econometrics and brought up a group of talents in modern economics. His work in orthogonal experimental design has created considerable economic benefits for the society.
