On Oct. 29th, Professor Shu Chien's Employment Ceremony as the Honorary Professor of HUST was held in Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics. Professor Shu Chien is a prestigious Chinese-American scientist, Academician of Four Academies in America.
Luo Qingming, Vice President of HUST, together with Lin Lin, Assistant to President, attended the Employment Ceremony. Kuang-Chung Hu, wife of Professor Chien, was also invited to be present at the ceremony, in which the Vice President awarded Professor Chien the Letter of Appointment.
Professor Chien expressed his delight to visit HUST, as well as his great honor to be employed by our university. He also modestly remarked that the National Laboratory for Optoelectronics was in good operation, even better than the lab of University of California, Berkeley UCB and that he came to learn rather than lecturing.
Professor Chien then delivered a lecture of Medicine and Engineering of the New Century , at the invitation of Scientific Spirit and Practice Course. He introduced the research findings of the Whitaker Biomedical Engineering Institute in University of California, San Diego, as well as the contributions his colleagues made to the realm of biomedical engineering. Then, he expressed wishes that students, especially science students of HUST, should promote understanding of the relationship between life science, engineering technology and humanistic community, and that they should keep the whole world in view as well as keeping an eye for details. Furthermore, they should see things from various angels and perspectives, speculate carefully and study attentively.
The lecture was followed by the Opening Ceremony for the first "Shu Chien Class" of Britton Chance Research Center for Biomedical Photonics. The enrollment of the first "Shu Chien Class" is oriented to junior students of four majors in School of Life Science &Technology. Academician Chien is the honorary head teacher of the class, and Luo Qingming the head teacher. Professor Chien encouraged students as such, "You are bound to succeed, not because of me, but of you."
As is known, US academician of Four Academies is academician of top four academies in America, including National Academy of Sciences , National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Arts & Sciences. Only six academicians so far have been awarded the honor, among which four have retired. Therefore, Professor Chien becomes one of the only two scholars on office, as well as the only ethnic Chinese till now.
