In October 2009, Mr Lu Gang went to the United States to attend an Advanced Workshop for Chinese university leadersin Yale University.Accompanied by Liu Junhua, local Chinese consul, and He Lining,President of the Chinese Association in New York, he visited the headquarter of General Electric Global Research Center, and conducted an in-depth talk with GE vice president, Mr Michael Idelchik, introducing the Wuhan New Energy Research Institute and the National Laboratory for Optoelectronics and putting forward the idea of full cooperation with GE.
Mr. Idelchik jsexpert in international advanced new energy technologies. He believesthat as the world's two largest energy powers, China and the U.S. have broad prospects for cooperationin the new field of energy, especially in R & D cooperation. He showed great interest inthe Wuhan New Energy Research Institute's new energy plan , and immediately agreed they would send the president of GE Technology Center in Shanghai to visit HUST to discuss concrete cooperation.
Subsequently, Mr Lu Gang and GE's energy technology research scientists held a meeting. GE high-level experts were very interested in the Wuhan New Energy Research Institute andtheresearch of HUST, then he expressed his willingness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Wuhan, as well as HUST, and would visit Wuhan and HUST in the future.
During the stay in the United States, Mr Lu Gang visited ZhangXicheng, a world famous expert in terahertz technologyin the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and invited Professor Zhang to establish a cooperation base in the National Laboratory for Optoelectronics in Wuhan. He also met Professor Robert Palazzo, executive vice president, Professor David Spooner, acting dean of the School of Science, and Professor Wang Guoqing, director of Department of Physics. The two parties pledged to strengthen exchanges of teachers and students.
Mr Lu Gang went out of his way to the Chinese community Albanyto visit nearly 60 Chinese professors, research technicians and students including some HUST alumni in RPI, GE, and SUNY-Albany, AlbanyMedical University. Mr Lu Gang illuminatedHUST s academies and research development, highlighting its personnel policies, encouraging them to work or serve China in various forms.He also answered their questions.
Lu Gang also visited the Alumni, MIT professor Chen Gang's laboratory, and called in Liu Guandong, President of the New York Alumni Association.
