Su Dingqiang (right), Professor of Astronomy at Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has had an asteroid named after him in recognition of his contributions to China s astronomical research.
At a ceremony on July 22 inHaining City, Zhejiang Province, the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), announced the naming for the No. 19366 asteroid, which it discovered on November 6, 1997.
Prof. Su, a prominent astronomer and expert in optical engineering, graduated from the Department of Astronomy, Nanjing University, in 1959 and was elected as an academician by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991.
He has made great contributions to the development of China`s astronomical telescopes. He is among the earliest Chinese researchers of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST), which will be built in the coming five to six years to trace the universe`s origin.
Prof. Pan Yi, Vice President of Nanjing University, attended and addressed the naming ceremony.
