On May 18 the opening ceremony for the Sino-Finnish Environmental Research Centre (SFERC) and its 1st International Conference on Environmental Research and Management was held at the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies. The SFERC, established by NanjingUniversity, the University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio together, will be a platform for scientists and enterprises from both countries to conduct joint research and training and academic exchanges in the area of environmental sciences.
Prof. Hong Yinxing, Chancellor of Nanjing University, Prof. Chen Jun, President of Nanjing University, Prof. Matti Uusitupa, Rector of the University of Kuopio, and Prof. Perttu Vartiainen, Rector of the University of Joensuu, unveiled the center.
The University of Joensuu and the University of Kuopio have particular strength in the research fields of forestry, environmental sciences, new materials and innovation technology. The two universities will merge together and form the University of Eastern Finland in 2010.
