The 2009 State Language Strategies Summit Forum was held at Nanjing University on May 13. The theme of the forum was language resources and language economy. Participants exchanged ideas on the development, protection and distribution of language resources, the relationship between Chinese Dialects and Standard Mandarin, and the international promotion of the Chinese language.
To cope with the current global financial crisis, Xu Daming, Director of the China Center for Linguistics and Strategic Studies of Nanjing University, suggested developing language economy to increase domestic demand and promote language consumption and employment. Prof. Zhang Haiyang from Minzu University of China and Dr. Xu Shiliang from Nanjing University also talked about the reconstruction and protection of the Qiang language after the Wenchuan earthquake.
Ren Lijian, Vice Chancellor of Nanjing University, and Bu Jinkun, Deputy Director of Jiangsu Education Department, attended the opening ceremony of the forum.
