Dr. Michinari Hamaguchi, the newly appointed President of Nagoya University, visited Nanjing University (NJU) on December 18 and had a meeting with NJU President Chen Jun. This is President Hamaguchi s first official visit to NJU since he took office this April.
President Chen Jun gave a hearty welcome to Dr. Hamaguchi. During their meeting, President Chen Jun reviewed the long-term friendly partnership between Nanjing University and Nagoya University. He also briefed Dr. Hamaguchi on the measures taken by NJU to build a world-class university, its achievements, and the challenges of its internationalization.
President Hamaguchi shared the new development plan of Nagoya University, and stressed that Nagoya University, where the General Secretariat of the Academic Consortium for the 21st Century (AC21) is located, strives to promote the development of research and educational exchange between AC21 members. Nagoya University had already invited Nanjing University, Clark Atlanta University and the University of Sydney to take part in its Special (Collaboration) Project.
President Chen Jun called for closer cooperation between the two universities, especially in the fields of physics, chemistry, earth science and medicine. President Hamaguchi agreed and pledged to hold a bilateral seminar on earth science next year.
Nagoya University is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, particularly in the education of science, engineering, medicine, law and geology. The cooperation between Nanjing University and Nagoya University has a long history. They signed the first intercollegiate cooperation agreement in 1982.
