(XJTLU, China, 31st March) The Ministry of Education (MoE) has recently approved the opening of two more undergraduate programmes, namely, BSc Environmental Science and BEng Digital Media Technology. As of September 2011, the University will offer a total of 21 undergraduate programmes.
Students of Environmental Science will acquire fundamental knowledge and practical skills through the study of subjects such as: environmental sustainability, energy development and application, and town and country planning amongst. They will also learn how to analyze environmental problems in depth applying their solutions to real-world problems such as the pollution of the atmosphere, soils and water. There are a wide variety of careers options for graduates of Environmental Sciences for instance, environmental consultant or working in industry to help mitigate environmental impact.
Students of Digital Media Technology will obtain a broad understanding of the hardware and software which support the digital media industries, and how these can be applied creatively. The course will include subjects such as: digital electronics, C and Java programming and software engineering, multimedia and music technologies to name but a few. This programme hopes to meet the enormous demands for creative and skilled engineers in internet development, the games industry and information systems management in the rapidly growing digital media industries.
Meanwhile this year, the University s Languages and Culture Department will open a programme of BA English and Communication Studies. This interdisciplinary programme combines the studies of English language, English literature, communication and media. Graduates of this programme will have an appreciation of the changing use of language and the ways in which it is used to inform and influence contemporary society and, vitally, be able to communicate professionally in English within the context of journalism and the media. Graduates may be able to pursue a career as a journalist, professional translator or interpreter, or as a teacher of English as a foreign language.
The aforementioned programmes will be improved by drawing upon the established resources of XJTLU s two parent universities and integrating the developing characteristics of industries at Suzhou and the Yangtze River Delta. The University is determined to, by making full use of its existing conditions, construct world-class academic faculty, and build up elite specialties which are able to address the global labour market demands.
