President Xu Xianming Visited the European Organization for Nuclear Research

Invited by Professor Samuel Ting, a winner of the Nobel Prize in physics, SDU President Xu Xianming visited the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and was given an brief update on the two major international cooperative projects AMS and ATLAS in which SDU is involved.

President Xu s visit was just before the completion of the preliminary installation and adjustment of theAMS Project. Prof. Ting introduced the process of design, cooperative research and progress of AMS. He highly praised the SDU research team led by Prof. Cheng. Accompanied by Prof. Ting, President Xu visited the assembly workshop of AMS and was briefed by Prof. Cheng Lin on the creative idea, invention and technology of the AMS thermal system.

President Xu also paid a visit to the control center of CERN, the testing room of the superconducting magnet and the control center of ATLAS. Prof. Block, Director of the Department of Physics of CERN, made an introduction about CERN to President Xu. He highlighted the contribution of SDU to the development of the ATLAS detectors and extended his best wishes to SDU for its development in ATLAS physical analysis. President Xu went to the experimental control center to meet the SDU teachers and students who took part in the ATLAS experiment. He acknowledged their enthusiasm for research and wished they would have a fruitful and enjoyable stay at CERN.

During the visit, President Xu also visited the Headquarter of WHO in Geneva and met with Eric Laroche, the representative of theGeneral Secretary, Fu Cong, the consultant of General Secretary and officers in charge of the Strategic Health Operations and Health Service System. They reached consensus about cooperation in control and management of public health emergent crisis and establishing an information sharing platform. They also exchange views on the possibilities of designating the School of Nursing of SDU as the WHO collaborative center for nursing.
