The Representative Office of Georg-August-University of Goettingen in Nanjing Opened

On the morning of October 10, the representative office of Georg-August-University of Goettingen in Nanjing was opened in NJU. The establishment of this office is aimed to promote the cooperation in the two universities' academic research and the exchange of faculty and students. Zou Yajun, director of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange of NJU, and Professor Moose, director of the Office of Foreign Affairs of Georg-August-University of Goettingen, presided over the opening ceremony.
At the opening ceremony, President Chen Jun pointed out in his speech that NJU and Georg-August-University of Goettingen are both prestigious universities in their own country. Established in 1737, Georg-August-University of Goettingen is one of the universities with the longest history and one of the nine key universities in Germany while NJU is hundred-year-old Chinese university who is famous for her activeness in international exchange. The two universities began their cooperation since 1989, when the Sino-Germany Institute for Economic Law (the predecessor of today's Deutsch -- Chinesisches Institut f r Rechtswissenschaft). Approximately 100 Chinese postgraduate students have graduated from this institute with a Master of Law in both China and Germany. In 2004, the two universities simultaneously established the Institute of the Chinese and German Culture. The 20 years of cooperation and friendship between the two universities has yielded fruitful achievements.
Other speakers included Li Jianmin, deputy secretary of China Scholarship Council, Mr. Schtereitzmann, minister of the Department of Education and Culture of Niedersachsen, Xu Zhongzi, deputy mayor of Nanjing, Dr. Figura, president of Georg-August-University of Goettingen, and the director of the representative office. Other participants included Zhang Yibin, deputy president of NJU, the deputy secretary of the Nanjing municipal government and directors from China Scholarship Council, the Office of Foreign Affairs of Jiangsu Province, the Office of Foreign Affairs of Nanjing, the School of Foreign Studies of NJU and Deutsch -- Chinesisches Institut f r Rechtswissenschaft as well as professors from Beijing Foreign Studies University and Haerbin Industry University.
In the afternoon, Pan Yi, depute president of NJU presided over a conference for scholars from the two universities to exchange their academic insights. At the conference, the deputy president of Georg-August-University of Goettingen expresses his opinions about the prospect of the cooperation between the two universities. Later, three Chinese professors and three German professors gave speeches on their respective field law, intercultural studies and chemistry. After the speeches, Mr. Moose introduced the English courses in his university.
At four o'clock in the afternoon, President Chen Jun and Deputy President Zhang Rong met with the delegation from Georg-August-University of Goettingen. They warmly welcomed the German delegation and discussed with them the issues of student exchange and academic cooperation. Georg-August-University of Goettingen hoped that they can strengthen their Asian studies, especially the study on China. They also expressed their wish to cooperate with NJU in the fields of biology, physics and geography in addition to law, German and chemistry. President Chen Jun welcomed their suggestions and hoped that NJU will establish a representative office in Georg-August-University of Goettingen in the future for the benefit of both universities.
