From Oct. 23, famous professors from NJU began to enter the high schools in Jiangsu Province to give lectures and speeches. This activity was organized by the Students Affairs Office.

In the afternoon, Prof. Wang Dezi from the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Prof. Wang Rucheng, Dean of the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, visited Changzhou High School and Qianhuang High School respectively and gave lectures on popular science. Prof. Wang Dezi s lecture, which was titled Nature, Resources and Man , included new scientific development in earthquake prediction, energy strategies, water resources and the treatment of pollution. Prof. Wang Rucheng, on the other hand, introduced the history of earth, including basic knowledge of plate tectonics, the causes for earthquakes and the formation of volcanoes as well as reasonable utilization of natural resources. Both of the professors tried to make the students aware of the serious situation of the earth and its resources and the importance of environmental protection.

The goal of this activity was to strengthen the ties between NJU and key high schools, cultivate the students interest in science and present NJU s academic advantages. The influence of the activity has been increasing over the years. Recently, Prof. Lu Xiaoping, Deputy Dean of the School of Arts, went to Yangzhao High School and had a talk with the students there on art and life. On Oct. 26, Prof. Wang Jizhi was invited to give a lecture on writing for students and teachers in Bencha High School at its 80th anniversary.

According to the schedule of the Students Affairs Office, more professors and experts will visit high schools in the province and give lectures on science and culture.
