In order to celebrate the 81st anniversary of Chongqing University (CQU), the 1st International Culture Festival of CQU initiated by the Office of International Cooperation & Exchanges and the College of International Education & Exchanges of CQU was opened grandly on Oct. 12, 2010.
With Beautiful Chongqing University & Multi-culture as the theme, the opening ceremony for the 1st International Culture Festival of CQU was held at the square of the main teaching building at 14:00 under the auspices of Vice-president Bai Chenguang of Chongqing University and with the attendance of leaders from the Ministry of Education, China Scholarship Council, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs of P. R. China, Chongqing Municipal Education Commission and the Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Chongqing Municipal People s Government. The representatives from consulates including the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Pakistan, Hungary and America at Chongqing and Chengdu, as well as Chongqing French Alliance and Italy Center were presence at the ceremony.
Director Zhang Xiuqin expressed her congratulation on the 1st International Culture Festival of CQU on behalf of the Department of International Cooperation & Exchanges of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China. She highly evaluated the achievements made by Chongqing University in the field of international communication & cooperation in recent years, praised the Photography Show of China in Foreigners Eyes and the World Charm Show, confirmed the sincerity and enthusiasm of CQU foreign students for Chongqing University and the International Culture Festival, and hoped that the festival could achieve complete success.
Consul General Nicholas Whittingham of British Consulate-General in Chongqing made a speech on behalf of foreign embassies and consulates in China, reviewed the cooperation between Britain and Chongqing University, expressed his hope for further cooperation, and hoped that all foreign friends could work and study happily in Chongqing University.
Zhao Weiliang, Deputy Director of Chongqing Municipal Education Commission said, Chongqing needs opening up for its development. The International Culture Festival, as a grand gathering for cultural exchanges, is not only meaningful but also valuable. I hope CQU could try to make the International Culture Festival into a brand and take it as the platform for broadening publicity, improving further the popularity and influence and driving the internationalization of the university.
Mi Fei(Chinese name), a Russian student from the College of International Education & Exchanges, spoke on behalf of the foreign students, introducing in fluent standard Chinese the joys and sorrows in studying Chinese. She could even speak Chongqing dialect. After one-year study, she fell in love with Chinese and the hot pot of Chongqing. And she also expressed the expectation and happiness of the foreign students for the International Culture Festival which provided a chance for the foreign students to show their own culture.
The Chairman of the University affairs Council, Prof. Ou Keping, awarded the festival flag to President of Foreign Student Union Li Xuexian and declared the opening of the 1st International Culture Festival. Then with fireworks display, thunderous applause and dynamic African dance, the artistic performance of the International Culture Festival officially began. And the colorful programs made the audience experience the charm all over the world, such as Russian students dance to the folk song solo, romance in Hello Thailand, ebullient hip-hop, Japanese folk song and dance full of labor fun and Black Horse by students from 4 countries of Central Asia, all presenting the unique tradition and custom of each country. What s more, a combination of lovely Italian dances brought a high tide, even attracting the audience to dance with the performers. And then the national costume show by students from China and other 28 countries glutted the audience s eyes. Finally, Ke Sen, a student of Bahamas from Donghua University, rounded off the performance with the song I Love You, China. Before the enthusiastic atmosphere of the artistic performance disappeared, the World Charm Show and the Photography Show of Foreign Students had been crowded and busy. And the foreign students from 54 countries showed their talent and exhibited the historic culture, customs and unique food of their own country at the booth for each country, which made the exciting visitors seem to be at the Expo.
During the 5 days of the 1st International Culture Festival which Photography Show of China in Foreigners Eyes, Special Artistic Performance of Chinese Wind, Football Match between Chinese and Foreign Students, Chinese Contest of Foreign Students, etc. will also be held.
As part of the 81st anniversary celebration for the foundation of CQU, the International Culture Festival aimed to show the multicultural atmosphere of CQU, build a platform for the cultural exchanges between Chinese and foreign students and also drive teachers and students of China and foreign countries to together enjoy the charm of a harmonious world.
