There was a recorded 5.9-million short-term trips made by international visitors to Australia last year. This figure registers a 5.6-million increase from recorded figures for 2008 and 2009.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has reported visitor numbers from New Zealand make up for 20% of the total number of visitors coming to Australia, followed by the UK, USA, China and Japan respectively. The figures released by ABS has also shown that 46% of short-term arrivals visited Australia for holidays, with 24% visiting friends and relatives, as reported by eTravel Blackboard.
A reported 38% of the total number of international visitors opted to head to New South Wales, while 25% went to Queensland and 21% to Victoria.
