1. XJTLU students Excel in US Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)
Five teams from Xi an Jiaotong-Liverpool University won first prize in the, with a further nine second prizes and three third prizes, a new University record in terms of prize-winning number and ratio, which consecutively places XJTLU among the most successful institutions both domestically and internationally in the recent three years.
2. XJTLU Opens New Buildings for Teaching, Experiments and Research
The establishment ceremony of newly constructed Sciences Building (Building 2) was held on May 23. Meanwhile, another event - the ground breaking ceremony of Administrative and Information Centre (Building 3), Engineering and Management Sciences Building (Building 4) was taking place with massive attention. Building 2 covers an area of 45,100 m , equipped with world-class teaching and experiment facilities, and is built mainly for teaching and researching. Building 3 will cover an area of 60,000 m , containing the centres for Administration, Learning Resources, Training, and Student Activities. It won the CNBC Asian Pacific Commercial Property Award 2009, one of the only three award winners on mainland China. Building 4 will cover an area of 50,000 m . The construction of the University s north campus will be completed in 2012, upon which the internationalized campus shall be one more landmark in SIP.
3. XJTLU Granted Degree Awarding Power for Chinese Academic Degrees
According to official information from Academic Degrees Committee of Jiangsu Province (Document No. 2010-6), the results of 2010 degree awarding power evaluation have been released on 17th June 2010. Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University has been approved as a degree awarding powered university. With the success in the DAP evaluation, the undergraduate students of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University will be granted Bachelor's degrees of Liverpool University, Bechelor's degrees and graduation certificate of XJTLU. This makes XJTLU become the only China-Foreign co-operative university which is able to award Chinese academic degrees among the few co-operative universities in China.
4. XJTLU Faculty Resources Ranked 12th in China
In the middle of June, 2010, Xi an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is listed into candidacy to China s Top 100 Universities and ranks 12th in terms of faculty resources, according to Chinese University Ranking Chart 2010 released by netbig.com. The ranking is based on a full set of criteria including proportion of academic staff holding associate professorship and above, faculty-to-student ratio, and the number of academicians and Yangtze Scholar engaged professors, etc. XJTLU scored full points in the first two items. All academic staff of XJTLU is hired in compliance with the standard of world renowned universities. All program-specialized academic staff members are doctorate holders of world-famous universities with rich experience of overseas teaching and need to be certified for teaching before receiving orientation training of the University of Liverpool. An extra 100-near academic staffers are to be recruited for 2010-2011 academic year.
5. XJTLU s 2010 Nation-Wide Student Recruitment Campaign Ended with a Great Success
The University s 2010 nation-wide student recruitment in 29 provinces ended in July. The University originally planned to recruit 1615 students, but actually admitted over 1700, a new record in its history. This year, 57 new students won entrance scholarships. Among them were 19 winners of the first prize (60,000 RMB), who were enrolled over 70 points higher than the local threshold score and another 38 second-prize winners admitted at least 50 points higher with 30,000 RMB each.
6. Inaugural Graduation Ceremony of Xi an Jiaotong-Liverpool University
On August 6, 2010, Xi an Jiaotong-Liverpool University welcomes its first inaugural graduation ceremony. 67 out of the 136 graduates were granted First Honours degrees which are almost five times of the average percentage of total university graduates in 2008-2009 academic year in the UK. Besides, as much as 97% of all the graduates will pursuit their Masters or PhDs in world renowned universities. And 10% of them received letters of admission from prestigious universities like Oxford University, Cambridge University, Imperial College London, the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Liverpool University etc.; among which, 5 of them will continue their studies straight-forward to PhD program with full or half scholarships.
7. University Approved 3 more NSFC Fund projects in 2010
In September 2010, XJTLU is approved three more NSFC projects by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They are Research on Incremental Attribute Learning: Theory, Algorithms, and Applications, undertaken by Prof. Steven Guan, Dean of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Research on the Role of Carbonic Anhydrase in Diagnostic Pathology of Amyotropnic Lateral Sclerosis, and Mechanics of Spin Polarized Current and Nano Machine by Dr. Hao Yu s, Centre for Mathematics and Physics. In 2009, XJTLU was approved as an institution supported by NSFC and registered a project-approving-rate as high as 50% in the same year with record 6 projects listed in NSFC Dean s Fund, Young Scientist Fund and General Projects.
8. Suzhou Bio-Medicine Key Lab for New Drug launched in XJTLU
On October 13th, the opening ceremony of Suzhou Key Lab for Metabolic Syndrome New Drug was held in Xi an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. As pathogenesis is not clear for the moment, there are no cure medicines with radical effect upon this kind of diseases available so far. The purpose of XJTLU s establishing a developmental biology key lab is to focus on the research of the influence of early development against adults metabolic disease. Under the support of Suzhou municipal government, Suzhou Key Lab for Metabolic Syndrome New Drug was set at XJTLU and extra emphasis was placed for prevention and early intervention of type 2 diabetes. In order to build the key lab into a research institute with internationally-recognised level, XJTLU has engaged 6 top experts being invited to be members of the key lab academic committee, offering guidance for scientific research development in XJTLU. The six experts came from Universities like Southampton, Cambridge, Warwick, Barcelona and Peking University of China.
9. XJTLU Launches RMB 6m Fund to Promote Research Development
In October 2010, XJTLU launches a sum of RMB 6m fund for the purpose of promoting the University s research development, including RMB 5 million Research Development Fund (RDF) and RMB 1 million Research Postgraduate Scholarships (PGR). The research fund opens to all the teaching staff and research students of the University, without a limit on the number of applications and the amount of any individual application for funding, which further manifests the University s resolution and confidence to create a best research environment, to improve its comprehensive level in research and to establish a research-led international university.
10. XJTLU Students Qualify into the 2010-2011 IBM Business Challenge Semi-Final
On December 3th, 2010, the name list for the semi-finals of the 2010-2011 IBM Business Challenge is released. 40 students of XJTLU 2+2 program have qualified into the semi-finals, with a processing rate of 76%, 51 percent higher than the average rate in UK universities. The XJTLU students account for 62% of the 65 qualified UoL students. The IBM Universities Business Challenge is a premier inter-university business competition, with an objective of cultivating students entrepreneurships and management abilities. 2010 is one of the most fiercely contested years, seeing more than 1,400 students enter from over 75 top universities around the world.
