Representing the Nation of Brunei as well as XJTLU, 8 students gave an excellent account of themselves at this year s Model United Nations (M.U.N) conference held at Harvard University, America. The conference is the largest, oldest, and most prestigious of its kind, beginning in 1955 only a decade after the original, hosting over 300 universities from every continent.
The executive president of XJTLU M.U.N and one of the travelling team, Zezhengzi Zhao, expressed that how they were very aware of the situation they were in and the difficulties encountered. The first 2 days were a little uncomfortable sometimes we could not understand what they are talking about because they speak too fast and used some really difficult words. However after that things went a lot smoother and we became a lot more involved.
The 4-day conference revolved around the 1991 topic of Civil War in Somalia, which was debated among all the representatives of each country following the principles and procedures of the real United Nations. This involved moving motions, negotiating, lobbying and eventually agreeing on the different issues bearing in mind the interest of your own country.
Zhao believed our students performance in the debate will warrant a return visit next year, I think we did a very good job, made a lot of friends and all of us signed the paper that was passed so I think we will be invited back.
However the M.U.N of XJTLU has aspirations to hold their own International conference in the future. This year they will hold a national conference with universities from all over China in attendance, definitely a step in the right direction and one that matches the universities rapid growth, as the M.U.N is just 3 years old.
We have been working very hard, said Zhao, we try to be professional and I think we have done a very good job. She also mentioned that this month another travel team will make the trip to Singapore for the Worldwide Model United Nations, an even larger event than Harvard.

The students managed to do some sightseeing and travelling around the states, visiting prestigious universities like M.I.T and Yale, Washington and even New York.
They also noticed some differences with their American counterparts, who were just as committed to their studies as their life outside of the classroom. They were very open and vocal about their feelings whereas Chinese students think a lot more before they say something.
To round off the event Harvard organised an M.U.N ball and cocktail party for all the attendants but due to the legal age for alcohol being 21 in the United States, only one of our team could enjoy them!
