The Malaysian government has waived taxes on 400-imported goods starting January 2011. This is part of an initiative to position Malaysia as a premier duty free shopping destination.
The waiver of tax on a wider variety of goods is deemed to draw more tourists and to attract more luxury brands to invest in the country. According to a report in eTurbo News, the Malaysian government wants to focus on three main areas to increase tourism revenue through shopping, namely, implementation of tax exemptions on a wider range of goods; promotion of Bukit Bintang/KLCC shopping district as the premier shopping hub; and the development of three new premium outlets.
The tax waiver is deemed to attract more visitors to Malaysia s yearly sale carnivals such as the Malaysia Grand Prix Sale, Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival and Malaysia Year End Sale.
