MEMBER OF POLITICAL BUREAU OF CPC CENTRAL COMMITTEE AND STATE COUNCILOR LIU YANDONG COMES TO OUR UNIVERSITY FOR INSPECTION

On the afternoon of January 29, 2010, member of Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee and State Councilor Liu Yandong came to inspect our university. She extended her New Year greetings to all the staff and students in our university. Leaders from Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education, deputy secretary of Shanxi Provincial Party Committee and governor of Shanxi province Wang Jun, vice-governor Zhang Ping were also in the inspection team. They were accompanied by director-general of Department of Education of our province Li Dongfu, leaders of other departments concerned and the leaders of our university Qin Liangyu, Guo Guichun, Liu Weiqi, etc.

In the exhibition hall of the university s history, Liu Yandong listened to the narrator carefully and chatted with Secretary Qin Liangyu and President Guo Guichun from time to time. During the visiting, President Gui Guichun gave a brief account of the history of our university and its present situations. Liu Yandong fully affirmed our contributions to talents cultivating, scientific research and social service, and highly appreciated our long history of running the university and our profound cultural foundation. She pointed out that it was a valuable asset which was to be proud of that we had a 100-year history of running the university. She said, the 110th anniversary of the foundation of Shanxi University was near at hand, and at this time we should make great efforts to summarize some distinctive experience of running the university and our educational aims; we should further emancipate the mind, encourage innovation, develop good traditions and continue exploring new methods of educating and teaching so that we could push the overall level of our university to a new step. She stressed, Shanxi University must implement the scientific concept of development , execute the strategies of invigorating the country through science and education and building up the strength of the country with talented people , and undertake the responsibility of talents cultivating, scientific research and social service; the university must combine its development with the development of Shanxi Province, of the central area, and of the whole country; besides, Shanxi University should also make strategic plans, give prominence to its advantages and characteristics, and strive to build itself into a distinctive and high-level institution of tertiary education.

In Institute of Optics and Electronics, Liu Yandong watched the ongoing experiment with great interest as she listened to the introduction from Academician Peng Kunchi. She expressed her heartfelt thanks to the teachers and students who were committed to scientific research with unremitting efforts and bestowed high praise on the achievements of our university in scientific research, social service and so on. She pointed out, the development of Shanxi university has reached an all-time high, and we should vigorously enhance our capability of independent innovation, take the initiative to undertake heavy responsibilities, provide powerful supports in technology and talents for Shanxi s economy and society, and make our due contributions to promoting the modernized construction of the country and to serving the development of Shanxi s economy and society.

At the end of the inspection, Liu Yandong said that she was deeply impressed by Shanxi University and meanwhile greatly uplifted by its achievements. She was planning another visit to our university shortly.
